Masala peanuts club style

Masala peanuts is an entry on every club menu I have ever seen. Chennai, Bombay, Pune, Delhi, Belgaum and Mahabaleshwar are some of the places which have at least one or two 'clubs' with links to a colonial beginning, in army cantonments and in civilian areas .

Most of these clubs are housed in buildings made over a hundred years ago, bungalows with wide verandahs and vast lawns, some beautifully renovated, some ramshackle and neglected. Standard fare on the menu of snacks are Finger Chips i.e. french fries, Chutney sandwich, Chicken sandwich, Vegetable cutlet and Masala peanuts.

Great to accompany a glass of beer as they are unstoppably eatable.

1 1/4 cup of roasted peanuts with or without skins.
1 tablespoon olive or any other vegetable oil
2 cloves finely chopped garlic
1 finely chopped onion
2 finely chopped green chillies
2 tbsp. fresh coriander
Juice of two lemons. 2 tbsp.
1 tsp. Salt and 1/4 tsp. freshly ground pepper.

Heat one tablespoon of olive oil. When hot pop in the peanuts and fry well. Add onions and chillies and fry for a few minutes. Then add garlic, salt and pepper and mix well. Stir in coriander, wait till peanuts become golden brown ( if skinned). Finally add lime juice, stir for a minute and remove from heat. Garnish with some coriander leaves and serve in small bowls with a spoon.

Came to your site quite by accident - via a number of links - and am thoroughly enjoying it. Major plans to make the masala peanut last evening. Could'nt find any peanuts so that was self defeating! Have added you as a link from my blog if that's ok...?

Heh heh heh. Yum yum. Starving right now at 4 pm in Cologne and could do with some masala peanuts - not to mention beer!

Well you can't have the Willingdon Club there as well, so there.

Your blog is wonderful ! Can't believe I did not find it all these days...I have to try these masala peanuts soon. I loved eating them back in aamchi Mumbai :)

Hi 30in2005 .
Hope you got to make the peanuts ...i enjoyed reading your blog.It does give another perspective to what's happening, which is really what one hopes for when reading anything..books,( umhum) the paper (hopeless) or blogs (much good stuff here.)

Thanks Nupur. Planning a reciprocal visit now!

Great blog.
PS- a variant on masala peanut which i enjoyed lots of at Chandigarh club- add in some finely chopped ginger as well, tastes great!!

Thanks for the suggestion of adding ginger to the ingredients rekh n rob. I bet the Chandigarh Club variety tasted excellent.

Great blog! Love the masala peanuts recipe.

These sound like a wonderful party snack! I love the story about the clubs--always like food blogs that deliver more than just good food--and I love, love, love the term finger chips. I'd never heard that one. By the way, canola oil might be a good choice for this. It's neutral in flavor, but delivers a lot of the health benefits of olive oil.

Wow, that sounds delicious! What a great snack.
